Tsar Nicholas II was at the Alexander Palace in the small town of Tsarskoye Selo about 25 miles south of St. Petersburg. The palace and village was like a retreat for the Tsar and family away from the official Winter Palace and bureaucracy of the main capital St. Petersburg. The Tsar was never expected to be at the Winter Palace to receive the protesters and was not on that day.
A priest named Father Georgi Gapon led a peaceful procession to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg with a petition signed by more than 150,000 people. The petition demanded that basic human rights be granted, improvements in working conditions and an end to the Russo-Japanese war. When the procession arrived at the Winter Palace they were attacked by Cossacks, with "men woman and children dropping to the ground like logs of wood" Gapon described it. 100 were killed and 300 were wounded. This marked the start of the 1905 revolution.
