Allthough Germany quickly ran over the Dutch forces, the ressistance in both The HAgue and Rotterdam was more than expected. The German command was afraid valuable time would be lost.
They gave the Netherlands an ultimatum surrender or Rotterdam will be bombed.
Allthough the Dutch surrendered, the city was still bombed.
Two stories go about this.
- the first talks about an unfortunate error
- the second about a show of force by Germany.
The bombardment cost 800 people their lives.
Later in the war (1943), Rotterdam was bombed again, by the allies! This was an action to destroy the German Kriegsmarine that was in the harbour. Bad navigation caused the bombs to be thrown of urban territory, killing another 400 people.
