In the 1790s political parties were on the rise. In 1796 George Washington annonced he wasn't going to seek his third term. The republican candidate who ran for preseident was Thomas Jefferson and the federalist candidate was John Adams. John Adams had been George Washington's vice president. John Adams became preseident and Thomas Jefferson became vice president.
