The basic synopsis of the 1956 Arab-Israeli War would be to say that President Nasser of Egypt was planning to nationalize the Suez Canal, which heretofore was controlled by the British and the French. When Egypt forced the Britons and French out militarily and secured the canal, they asserted the right to choose which boats could go through and which could not. This was an abrogation of the Suez Canal's neutrality (all canals are neutral). Since Egypt opposed Israel, they banned Israeli ships. Therefore, Britain, France, and Israel all lost out due to this new arrangement that Egypt set up and declared war to achieve the pre-Nationalization status quo. Israel conquered the entire Sinai Peninsula, but gave it back to Egypt with assurances that the Suez Canal would be neutral again.
