The Archaic period is also referred to as the dark ages because we have little to no written record of that time period. The following Classical period is when Greece peaked artistically and intellectually.
Homer was the only poet we might say was famous from the Greek Dark Ages. The Greek Dark Ages began with the collapse of Mycenaean culture, and lasted about 400 years. The dates would be about 1200 to 800 BC. Homer is sometimes dated to as early as 950 BC, and sometimes as late as about 750. That being the case, he is arguably from the Greek Dark Ages.
