Murder was carried out in the former bank. The murders were to turn out to be one of Austrila's largest serial killings, and were dubbed The Snowtown Murders, (Bodies in Barrels) murders. John Justin Bunting and Robert Joe Wagner used the former bank's vault to store their victims' bodies in barrels in 1999. Eleven people were murdered between August 1992 and May 1999, which included one victim, murdered in the bank's vault. The victim murdered in the banks vault, was part of the gang that had helped to murder the other ten of the eleven eventual victims. John Bunting (the gang leader), decided to murder one of his gang. Eight bodies were found in barrels.
The gang had chosen hydrochloric acid which mummified the remains, instead of dissolving the remains. Three of the other victims remains were found elsewhere in shallow graves at the gang leaders home. (Now demolished and now housing for the elderly). A film has been made of these grim events called Snowtown, dramatising the murders. More than 250 suppression orders were used, to keep certain details of the case being made public, these orders were overturned and the details made available to the public in 2011.
The building is currently for sale for $200,000 which includes the former bank on the ground floor, with the managers residence above on the upper floor. Due to the public interest and visitors to the town of Snowtown, locals had considered changing the name of the town to 'Rosetown', however the change was never made.
