Extermination camps played the key role in the Holocaust, as they enabled the Nazis to gas and cremate victims - in order words, to dispose of them systematically, quickly and "industrially". Before that the Nazis had relied on mass open air shootings and mass graves.
The death camps basically speak for themselves. Jews who go to the Death Camps die a lot quicker than those who suffer at the regular Concentration Camps. They call it a Death Camp because you basically die there immediately unlike Concentration Camps..in which they make you work until you die from fatigue or starvation, etc. The effect of this results in the death of many Jews.
Historians don't generally use the term death camp. There were concentration camps of varying degrees of harshness and extermination camps. Please see the related question.
