In the main most of the definitions posted here are incorrect or inaccurate in some form or fashion. One of the most often made mistakes about the Sand Creek Massacre is that the attacking soldiers were "militia" which they were not. The soldiers were parts of two duly authorised cavalry regiments under the chain-of-command of the United States War Department and designated at U. S. Volunteers or the 1st and 3rd Regiment Cavalry, Colorado (U. S.) Volunteers as were most of the soldiers who fought on the Federal or Union side during the Civil War. Militia, directly or indirectly mitigates the culpability of the soldiers and more especially their leaders, officers and politicians that this was some sort of "mob." It is for the reason that these were U. S. soldiers that the U. S. Army, the Dept. of Interior, General and Staff officers and the U. S. Government generally never denied responsibility for the action nor did they ever deny it was a massacre.
