Anne Boleyn was driven by her ambitious family to become queen of England. She became wife of the infamous king Henry VIII. Anne had long promised Henry that she would "give" him a son. But she was haunted by stress, fear and her ambitious family and all she could give the king was Elizabeth I and miscarriages.

Now, Henry VIII did not believe that a queen alone could rule a country and so he had to have a son, a male heir to the throne.

And when Anne couldn't give him a son, he soon began to take mistresses.

Annes political involvements made him even more pissed off.

Henry met Jane Seymour and thought she could give him a son.

Since he knew how strong and persistent Anne was, he decided to have her arrested, questioned and finally - executed by a swordsman from France.

This is the short version of the story. Why did this happen to Anne?

Well, the easiest answer would probably be that Annes family - especially her father and brother(who also was executed, falsely convicted of having had sex with Anne) - was very ambitious.

They were in love at the time of their marriage (look at his letters for proof). However, as she failed to give birth to a son, his passion turned to hate. He had her beheaded for incest, adultery, and witchcraft. She was also accused of seducing the king. None of these crimes had a shred of truth in them. She was faithful to the king and never practiced any sort of witchcraft. Anne's marriage to the king elevated her to Queen of England, a task no other had accomplished before. Anne's marriage symbolized great change, in theory, for England. For Henry to marry Anne he had break with the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, making him the Head of the Church of England. Though the Church of England was technically Anglican it continued to follow most of the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. Fast Fact: Anne was the last of the Henry's wives to have a coronation.

Here is a potted version of what happened....

Anne Boleyn (c1501-07 to 1536) the second wife of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547), was crowned Queen on 15 June 1533. On the 7th September the same year, she gave birth to her first child, Elizabeth, (later to become Elizabeth I), which upset Henry as he was determined the baby would be a boy. Over the next two years Anne had at least two miscarriages, thus dashing Henry's hopes of a male heir. When he tired of her and in fact already had his eye on another lady at Court (Jane Seymour), trumped up charges of incest, adultery, witchcraft and treason were conveniently brought against Anne. Courtiers friendly with Anne: William Brereton, Sir Henry Norris, Sir Francis Weston and Mark Smeaton her musician, were all implicated in the alleged adultery. Even Anne's brother, George Boleyn, was accused of incest with her. Anne was found guilty and sentenced to death, as were the five men accused with her.

She was beheaded at the Tower of London, on 19 May 1536, going bravely to her death (even joking the night before about how slim her neck was) and executed by an expert French swordsman who Henry had ordered, to give her a quick and more merciful execution. Anne's remains were put in an arrow chest and buried in the church of St. Peter ad Vincula, at the Tower. Her grave was originally unmarked, but during Victorian renovations her remains were identified and there is now a marker over her resting place.
