On the evening of March 1, 1932, between 8:00 and 10:00 pm an intruder used a crude stepladder to reach the second-floor nursery where Charles Lindbergh, Jr. slept. The child's nanny found a ransom note that had been left on the window ledge demanding $50,000 for the return of the 22 month old child of aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife. On March 6 another note came and was now asking $70,000. The money was delivered as demanded but no child was handed over. On May 12 the badly decompsed body of Charles, Jr. was found in a shallow grave about 5 miles from the Lindbergh's home. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the child's head.
Finally on September 18, 1934, some of the ransom money turned up at a gas station. The attendant was on his toes that day and he notified the police. It led them to a German immigrant named Bruno R. Hauptmann. In January 1935 Hauptmann was tried for the kidnapping and murder of Charles, Jr. He was found guilty and was executed in the electric chair at Trenton State Prison on April 3, 1936.
