After being discharged honorably from the army he located his real mother. (he was adopted being a week old) after that he joined a fraternity involved in non lethal things like fortune telling it was not to late after that around 1975 having confronted his real mother and his illegitimate pregnancy had troubled him that he started killing dogs with another fraternity. Not too long after that he started his .44 caliber killings.}
Since he was adopted very early in life this brought him some troubles while living with the Berkowits.
He was a shy loner, never quite comfortable in his own skin. His school career was less than spectacular as was his stint in the military. He was adopted as an infant and the reunion with his birth mother was not what he expected. He was very close with his adopted mother and after her death there seemed to be a constant tension between him and his father. He seemed to be a young man with no direction.
There is nothing in Berkowitz's childhood that would contribute to his later career as a serial killer. He was adopted and raised by two loving parents, who never abused him whatsoever. Most of Berkowitz's demons came from within him.
