When Joseph was nearing death he told his family to bring his bones into the promised land when that day came cuz he believed it would. And it did after 400 yrs. Read the book of Exodus. That's where the story begins about his descendants. when Moses was leading them out after the plagues they roamed the desert 40 yrs. Why. For one, the journey was not that long. But due to many grumblers and complainers they made God mad to the point that he had enough and decieded that he would wait till their kids grew up and they would die off and that is why it took 40 yrs. There were a couple of guys though who did not die out though. Caleb and Joshua. Moses didn't get to go either b/c of a disobedient act and Joshua took over his position. Now you have the beginning of the nation of Israel.
He was put in jail after serving Potiphar faithfully, and after that, Pharaoh made him chief ruler in the kingdom.

In the Bible, Simeon was kept as a prisoner in Egypt when he went there with his brothers, who had come to buy food during the famine. He was released later when Joseph revealed himself to his brothers and invited them to bring their father and families to live in Egypt.
