What had happened after he escaped from Dahmer's apartment (from what I recall, Dahmer went on a beer run, as Konerak was unconcious), two young women found bruised, bloody, and naked and called the police. Eventually Dahmer came back and then claimed to the police that the 14-year was his 19 year old lover and that they had gotten in an argument and that he was drunk, so he was incoherent (Dahmer drilled holes in his cranium and also inserted acid in his mouth, so he couldn't speak). Somehow, he was able to convince the police that this story was valid, and they left the boy with him. After that, Dahmer strangled him to death, and Dahmer kept his skull as a souvenir.
