As I've been told by my aunt who has been doing family tree research: the story goes like this , John Dillinger would stay at a boarding house in New York that was owned by relatives of the family. At some point after he had his plastic surgery, while staying at this boarding house, he had to leave to escape authorities. The dog was left behind with our relative. That relative gave the dog to my great grandfather who brought it back to the family farm in Tennessee where it became my grandfather's dog.
If anyone else has more information, we'd love to know. I'm going to look for a photo of my grandfather and John Dillinger's dog.
