In small towns the plague spread at it's fastest rate, small children and the elderly were hit first due to there weak immune systems, next were doctors due to them contracting the disease from trying to help the ill. People slowly locked themselves indoors and prayed that they would not contract the disease. The Pope used this method as well. The few who survived were the lucky ones. The just had to rebuild their lives to what they were before the epidemic.
The most life changing event in the Middle Ages was probably the Black Plauge. It killed millions of people and caused hundreds of towns to die off. It was pretty horrific.
