Nothing happened to Skylab in the mid 1980s. It was no longer existence at that time.

When satellites grow too old to be useful they are brought down from orbit so they burn up in the upper atmosphere and are destroyed. SkyLab was brought down from orbit the same way but it was so large and so heavy it was not completely destroyed in the upper atmosphere. Skylab fell back to Earth on 11 July 1979 and while most of it fell into the sea, quite a bit of the debris rained down on the Western Australian town of Esperance and surrounding areas. Most of the pieces were found on a 160km wide strip of land between the Perth-Adelaide highway and the Indian Pacific railway line.
