Until the civil rights act in 1964 the African American citizens of the United States were treated as second class, discriminated against, subjected to Jim Crow laws, placed in separate schools, and not allowed the rights to vote or live where they wanted. The hundred years between the end of the civil war and the civil rights movement saw very little change for African Americans. They were no longer slaves, but they were not "free" to live without discrimination.
