The Shinnecock Tribe located in South Hampton on Long Island, recently received federal recognition as an Indian Nation (June 2010). There are approximately 150 members living on 750 acres of tribal land. For years the tribe has been trying to get official recognition status so they could build a casino. They are now proceeding with those plans. The native language (Algonquin) of the Shinnecocks has nearly disappeared even though it was used commonly only 50 to 60 years ago, and there has been so much interracial marriage that most members of the tribe appear African American and have lost their Native American physical features.
