The early years of television included the network known as the DuMont network. DuMont began operations in 1944 as station WABD in New York. Paramount Pictures provided the early funds for the station. The network, however, lacked a radio station which its rival networks already had. TV experts have stated that a radio network was essential for signing on TV affiliates.
Complications with the FCC and complicated court rulings prevented DuMont from owning as many stations as its rival networks. Due to all this, DuMont ceased to operate in 1956.
