After captured Fort Stedman they advanced in order to break through the Union defensive system but they were stopped by a little stream, the Harrison Creek, behind which the Federals had rallied and were opposing a stout resistance to the attackers, backed also by their artillery firing from Fort Friend, a stronghold of the Union's second line of siege.

Furthermore the Confederate were also enfiladed by another Union stronghold, Fort

Haskell and Federal units were forming to counterattack them by flanking assaults.

So, at dawn, the Confederates gave up the attempt of breakthrough the Union Front of siege, moving out from Fort Stedman and retreating behind their lines.
