All the accruements of civilization fell along with the fall of Rome in Europe. People were being invaded by various groups and it was a major job to stay alive. There was no protection, no repair of roads or any of the infrastructure of the towns. Europe entered the period of time called the Dark Ages which lasted from about 410 to roughly 700. However, much of the classic literature was preserved in the monasteries and education continued for small groups in various locations.
There are adherents to single factors, but more people think Rome fell because of a combination of such factors as Christianity, decadence, and military problems. Even the rise of Islam is proposed as the reason for Rome's fall, by some who think the Fall of Rome happened at Constantinople in the 15th Century. Here I am writing about a roughly fifth century fall of Rome (or the western division of the Roman Empire).
