Japan was covered with ice caps and glaciers. the glaciers melted, which rose the sea level around Japan, separating Japan into islands. japan consists of other smaller islands such as Okinawa, and the Ryuku Islands.
World War II had many fronts, including but definitely not limited to Japan, Russia, China, Italy, North Africa, Poland and France. The Japanese home islands were only attacked in the later stages of the war, being bombed by the US and, in the case of the Kuril Islands, invaded by the Russians (who control them today).
