100,000 people died because the peasants killed anyone who got in their way. Instead of reforming the church as Marin Luther had wanted, they just destroyed a lot of holy buildings and killed a lot of people.

The French peasants revolted against the aristocracy for the reason that the aristocracy did not care for the lower class and treated them badly. During the revolution, the upper and lower classes reversed roles, as the peasants tried to crush the aristocrats by capturing them and sending them to death by La Guillotine.
Depends on what era you're speaking of, but the main reason why all peasants revolted in any period of time was because of the need for freedom, fights against corrupt policies,for righteousness, more pay etc.
The role was the same for all peasants thru out time: provide the labor for the rulers (the rich) to make money. It happened to the English peasants, the Russian peasants, and the French peasants (in France)...and it happened in Vietnam (French Indochina). Peasants provide the labor force; the Colonial ruler provides the funding, organization, and the product.
