During Communion, the story of Jesus Christ at the Passover dinner the night before his capture and hanging from the cross is read, and we take the bread, which represents his body, broken for us, and break it, then dip it in the wine (or Grape Juice), his blood shed for us, and then we eat the bread and pause for a moment of prayer.

Followers first eat a small sample of bread without yeast (unrisen), sometimes a cracker, which represents Jesus' body. They then drink wine (can be substituted with grape juice) which represents Jesus' blood. Communion is based on what Jesus showed his disciples during the Last Supper before he was crucified.

Roman Catholic Answer: The Eucharist (The Mass) is the re-presentation of the Last Supper when Jesus took bread, said the blessing, and say, "Take this, all of you, and eat it, This is My Body. Then he took the cup, and said, "Take this, all of you and drink it, for This is the Cup of My Blood.... Thus whenever you eat and drink of it, you eat and drink the Body and Blood of Our Lord until he comes again (St. Paul). At the words of consecration by the priest, the entire substance of the bread is transformed into the Body of Christ; likewise with the wine, it is entirely His Blood after the consecration. In Catholic Philosophy things have substance and accidents. For instance, flour could be white, powdery stuff, or burnt, black stuff, or bread. All of them are flour (the substance) while the accidents have changed (normal flour, burnt flour, baked flour). Water: steam, water, ice - all of them are the same substance, with different accidents. In the Mass, it is the other way around, the accidents remain (the flour and the wine) but the substance changes through a miracle of God.

Jesus was very forceful on this point as the Jews were trained to avoid even a semblance of cannabilism. When "many of them walked away" He did not call them back and tell them he was speaking metaphorically or spiritually, instead He turned to His apostles and asked them if they also wanted to leave!

Eucharist (communion) is the observance of Jesus' sacrifice by eating bread (his body, broken for us) and drinking juice (his blood, spilled for us). Keep in mind, Eucharist is only a analogy, there is no sort of "mystic" power in it.

In a normal 'communion' service is just like a normal church service except... Do u remember Jesus' last supper? they ate the bread and wine in order to remember Jesus! Well that's basically what happens in a communion service, except almost all churches use grape juice because of younger members.

What happens objectively is that you receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Our Blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. More than that, what actually happens, objectively, depends on a number of things: for instance, whether you are a Catholic in a state of grace, and receiving Holy Communion reverently, and fully aware; in which case, you would be receiving all the graces that you need to become a saint. Whether you do (become a saint) or not, depends on how well you connect with those graces and live them out. If you received Our Blessed Lord in a state of mortal sin, or while you are effectively excommunicated (either you are not Catholic, or you are a Catholic living in a sinful relationship, say a second marriage unblessed by the Church, or any other sexual relationship outside of a valid marriage, or any other state of sin, then you are, as St. Paul put it, eating and drinking judgment on yourself.

Depending on the church you attend, The Eucharist or Holy Communion is regarded as a symbol of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ -- or it is regarded that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine served during the Eucharist. This is why almost every Christian denomination requires people to show reverence during the Communion service.

Holy Communion, also called Eucharist, is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic church where bread and grape wine are given by the priest during mass and are symbolic of the body and blood of christ. There is more to it but didn't want to get too deep here.

When are christians allowed to receive there First Communion?

In order to do Communion, you have to take special classes that are around 3 months long and the Pastor/Preacher teaches the class. The classes are about communion, baptisim, the Ten Commandments etc. and once a person passes all the classes and attended all of them, the then go into Confimation which is a big deal. In confirmation the person has to memorize afew things and then they are confirmed and have their first communion. From then on, in the next church services(Sundays), the person can take communion. What happens when you don't have a First Communion?

The First Communion marks not only a child's beginning understanding of the Sacrament, but also a passage into a 'communion' of celebration with other believers. If I'm not mistaken, if a child has not made a First Communion along with religious instruction, they are excluded from the celebration until they complete this instruction.

Is there a priest at a Holy Communion service?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe only times that a Catholic Church would have a Communion service would be if a priest were not available. In my diocese the rules are that a parish may have a Communion service on one Sunday out of the year if it is impossible to get a priest. The Vatican forbids Communion services during the week, and on a regular basis. There had to have been a priest there before the Communion service to consecrate the Sacred Hosts.
