There is currently no definite end to Left 4 Dead 2. The game is still at the same point it was when it was released, all of the DLCs take place somewhere between the Parish, and the Passing.

Well, I'm guessing that they survived because at every end of a chapter they went to somewhere safe in a boat, truck or helicopter.
