In "The Book Thief," the falling action occurs as Liesel continues to navigate life in Nazi Germany, facing challenges and losses while finding moments of hope and connection. It includes her relationships with Max, her foster parents, and Rudy, as well as the impact of the war on her and the other characters. Ultimately, the falling action leads to the resolution of Liesel's story and the themes of the novel.
*SPOILER* At the end of the book, when Himmel Street gets bombed by Allied forces and all of Liesl's family and friends are killed. She is the only Survivor, as she was in the cellar at the time while everyone else was asleep. It's the saddest part of the book, and it always makes me cry, especially when Liesl finds her best friend Rudy's body and realises that she has always loved him, just as she now knows he always loved her. I'm practically welling up now just thinking about it, so I'd better stop writing.
