During the first quarter of the moon the moon and sun appear to be
at a 90 degree angle. At this time the sun's tidal influence cancels the moon's.
The tide then has a minimum range. I used to call them wimpy tides.
A neap tide happens during the quarter phase of the moon and they are weak tides. There is a very small difference between high and low tides during this time.

The tides are called neap tides. These occur during the First and Third quarter (in terms of moon phases) and are lower than the tides during New Moon and Full Moon phases.
The lowest point of a spring tide occurs during the neap tide phase, which is when the difference between high and low tide is the smallest. This typically happens about a week after the spring tide.
During a spring tide, the high water mark would be high up on the beach on the flood, and very far out on an ebb tide. During a neap tide, the high water mark is not so high or so low as during a spring tide.

A neap tide occurs when the sun, moon, and Earth form a right angle, resulting in weaker tides. A spring tide happens when they align, causing stronger tides.
'Neap' Tides. At high tide a neap tide is not as high as a Spring High tide. At Low tide a neap tide is not as low as a spring Low Tide. At a given point on Earth, a Sprimg tide may have a range of 30 feet. At the same point on Earth, a Neap tide may only have a range of say 20 feet.
The neap tide. This tide happens when the Moon is at first quarter and last quarter and has the least influence on the tide.
