The Prime Minister of Canada is not elected. Generally, when a parliamentary election is held, the party which wins the plurality of seats has their party nominated by the Governor General as the first to have a shot at forming the government. Whatever party happens to form the government generally selects their leader as Prime Minister. Then the Governor General appoints that leader as Prime Minister.
Governor is symbolic head of the state, while the Chief Minister is real head of the state. The Governor is appointed by the President of India while the chief minister happens to be chosen by majority party in the Legislative Assembly of the state. The Governor acts more like an agent of the Central Government in the State and remains in office till the pleasure of the President or five years. Chief minister remains in office till h/she enjoys confidence of the state legislature or five years.

As of March 2011 there IS no Deputy Prime Minister The Governor General consults the Cabinet and immediatly appoints a temporary leader until the majority party can elect a new leader of their party.

The list of succession if something happens to the governor would begin with the lieutenant Governor. If there is no lieutenant governor then it goes from the leader of the senate, the speaker of the house, the state Secretary, the State auditor, the state treasurer, and finally the attorney general are in line for governor.
