Every dog eats a little sand here and there. If he's going out of his way to eat sand, he either has a bad habit, or maybe he is deficient in some nutrient. I'd talk to his vet. How much? If he gets a little in his food it won't be a problem. If he's eating it straight, yea, that could be bad.
The sand can accumulate in the intestines, causing colic and intestinal blockage. While rare, this can require surgery to clear out the blockage. Also, your dog would likely have pretty bad dental problems from all the abrasion on his/her teeth from the sand.
I am not sure why your dog is eating sand, however I know cats will liter in the sand and it may be your dog smells and is trying to eat cat feces or even other dog feces. I would discourage your dog from doing this as sand caries lots of little critters that can be bad for your dog. Your best bet is to ask your vet and also ask them what the dangers to your pet can be for doing so.
Yes, it can. Happened to my dog. He vomitted a couple of times, kept stretching and was obviously unconfortable. we took him to the vet who did an ultrasound. Found stuff in the intestine and said if it does not come out normally they would have to operate him. Luckily my dog was well after a day.
The dog will, at first, lay on it's side, pant rapidly for awhile, and look (and feel) miserable. Then it will start "squatting", and continue to do that frequently for 8-12 hours. It SHOULD NOT be fed for 36 hours, but let it have all the water it may want. Dogs, given the opportunity, will eat themselves sick any chance they get. It is the owner's responsibility to see that does not happen.
