Nothing really happened, the church was split between catholics, protestants and puritans. The catholics weren't allowed to practice their religion in a church anyway! The reign of Elizabeth I was bad for religion, she was worried about rebellions and if someone didn't go to church, she probably who have just overlooked it, you would probably get kicked out of your 'group' but nothing serious.
