Imagine the world without owls the world would never be the same. Owls produce owl pellets and without owls there would be no owl pellets. Owl pellets are the leftovers from an owl's food. Owls eject these pellets by throwing up. We study these pellets to learn about vermin anatomy and owl diets. Without owls we wouldn't learn about these things. We know owls eat vermin but if owls were extinct then there would be an up rise in vermin population. Most people do not like vermin and wouldn't be happy about even more vermin running around. Not only do owls eat vermin they also eat small birds occasionally. Owls could be released into New York City to help the vermin problem. In fact one owl eats about 4 mice per day that is 1460 mice eaten by an owl per year.

The owls are very important to human beings because they eat up small animal pests like snakes, rodents, worms, etc., which can be harmful to human beings If the owls went extinct, the effect would be terrible and drastic. The snakes will begin to overpopulate, which increases the frequency of snakebites. The rodent pests like mouse, rat, shrew, etc. would also overpopulate which can drastically eat up human corps, which we can starve to death. Rodents will invade peoples house, causing great damage. There will be more rodent disease, which may trigger another plague like the European Black Death in the mid-13th century. There will also be too much worms, which can be scary. If the owls went extinct, these small animals pests, including snakes, rodents, worms, etc. would overwhelm the habitat, especially for human, which sounds really scary. That's why we should never make owls go extinct. The small insectivores, including lizards and frogs are very important, because they help eat up insect pests like mosquitoes, flies, cockroach, etc. However, the snakes eat up these insectivores, which removes some ability to control insect pests. However, the owl is there to eat up the snakes, so it can still keep the ability to control insect pests. If the owls went extinct, the snakes would overpopulate, which can affect insect pests control. The snakes would begin to eat up the small insectivores, including the lizards and frogs, which can increase the amount of insect pests. Then we'll experience more insects because there'll be less lizards and frogs to hunt the insects down.

Any food chain or food web that included herons would be affected. The animals that the herons preyed upon would no longer have that population control and could overrun their niche.

Do heron decoys work to keep herons away?

No it would not, if anything it would attract more herons by showing other herons that there is a good food source. If you are trying to stop herons from hanging about near a pond then buy a different decoy being a bird of prey (only £2-£3 from a good garden center). You could use a Buzzard, Sparrow hawk or a kestrel. You could also use a magpie or jay which is general pest to the heron because they steal their eggs.
