The card company can (and usually do) take you to court to recover their money. If you have a credit card, you have a contract with the card company to repay any outstanding balance.
If you default on payments, you will have ample opportunity to rectify your failings. If you simply ignore reminders etc - the card company can swiftly get you into court to answer for your failure to keep to your part of the contract.
A judgement against you will result in money taken directly from your wages (or state benefits) and you will be placed on the bad debtors list - making it virtually impossible to get a loan, mortgage or credit card in the future.
If you're having difficulties making the monthly payments - TALK to the card company ! They would usually prefer to come to a sensible arrangement, that go through the legal route !
