You can use your last pay stub, if available. If you need a copy of your W-2, it's best for you to request a replacement from your employer because that copy will have all the information you need. Your employer may charge you a small fee for this copy. Some employers or their payroll service provider have W-2s available on-line to their employees.

If the employer is out of business, you can obtain a free wage transcript from the IRS. This will give all the information from the W-2 except for the state tax withheld. To get state tax withheld, you can use your last pay stub for that tax year as proof of how much was withheld. Alternatively, the state may have a record of how much was withheld on your behalf, but not all states track it.

The Social Security Administration may be able to provide you with a copy, but their fees are quite high.
