The end result after a lot of aggravation via phone calls and mail from collection agencies could be a lawsuit. Which in 99.9% of the time the creditor/collector wins, receives a judgment and executes that judgment against any nonexempt property belonging to the defendant/debtor. Of course not all defaulted debts result in a lawsuit and judgment, but a person's credit history will always be negatively impacted for a very long time.

I would think not paying on your credit cards would have the biggest effect on them. I'm sure they would care less if you pay on your house as long as you pay them. If you have to make a choice between the two then pay on your house. Your house is more important to your survival and is secured by your mortgage but your credit card is most likely an unsecured loan.

Even though the charges on the card were his, I was responsible for the bill (because it was my credit card) . The credit card company did not get tired of chasing me for 7 years. They were relentless with sending me bills, & threatening to take me to court if I did not pay them. They did & I had to pay back the $2,900.00 that my ex-husband did not pay back on my credit card. Fortunately, they did not charge me interest on top of that. This situation ruined my credit score for a few years. After the credit card company got their money back, my credit score slowly recovered but it took many years to recover from this.
