Typically it will close and heal with some scar tissue within 10 minutes to 2 weeks depending on how long the piercing has been in and the person's individual body.

If you keep it in for too long you might start occuring swelling then if you keep it for too long they might be a soruce of infection

It all depends on the gauge of the jewelry, how old the piercing is, and on your own body. If the piercing is fresh, then the body will instantly start to try to close the wound. For well-healed piercings though, it might take a while for the hole to start to close.
