It could mean that you are misbehaved an it needs to stay. Or if you touched it it lost it's magic and can't go back to Santa so you need to apologize and get that magic snow stuff and sprinkle it on him or her depending what gender your elf is. DONT TOUCH THE ELF ON THE SHELF OR THEY MIGHT LOSE THEIR MAGIC IF YOU DO!

If an Elf on the Shelf loses its magic, it may not be able to "report" back to Santa each night or move around the house. It may also lose its ability to come to life at night. However, the Elf can still be used as a fun holiday decoration or toy by children.

It is possible for the elf to do that so if it does nothing really happens. Your elf probably thinks you are so good and doesn't need to report to Santa, or you touched your elf (which you are not supposed to do) and lost some of his magic and can't fly back to Santa.

If your Elf on the Shelf doesn't move sprinkle some cinnamon beside him because cinnamon is elf vitamins so then he will fly back to the north pole so elf doctors can take a look at him.
