The first part of the Eucharist (called the Liturgy of the Word follows the form of the old Synagogue service with readings from Scripture and a homily. The second part of the Eucharist (called the Liturgy of the Eucharist) is modeled on the Last Supper, which, itself, was modeled on the Passover Supper - this is where Christ's passion and death on the cross is made present (NOT repeated!) for us here, two thousand years later, and a half a world away.
