Primarily meat production causes a lot of greenhouse gas emissions (methane, nitrous oxide) not to mention the indirect emissions that are released, which of course are bad for the environment.

Also it takes a great amount of water to produce 1kg of meat compared to the production of 1kg of grain. The direct land usage for meat production is quite small but the land it takes to grow grain for the livestock is huge.
