She is cared for by her mother but when her mother dies Kira must appear before the Council of Guardians, who spare her life once she shows them that she can weave and embroider. She is given the job of repairing the robes for the Singer, who's job is only to sing and must bring a song once a year. Kira discovers she must dye her own thread and learns all the plants to use for all colors but blue.
