In the end of "Alice in Wonderland," Alice becomes frustrated with the nonsensical behavior of the Queen and stands up to her, declaring that it's all just a pack of cards. This causes the whole scene to disappear, revealing that it was just a dream. Alice wakes up and realizes that the characters in Wonderland were all playing cards, returning to her normal life.
Both books end with Alice causing a crisis by standing up to the ludicrous members of authority in Wonderland. Mayhem ensues which is resolved by Alice waking up and returning to the real world, only to discover that her time spent in Wonderland was just a dream.

The first book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, features just one queen, the Queen of Hearts (just like the playing card). The second book, Through the Looking-Glass, starts out with two - the Red Queen and the White Queen (just like the chess pieces) - but by the end of the book, Alice herself becomes a queen because she has reached the top of the board. (In chess, if a pawn reaches the top of the board it is made a queen)

Alice goes home when she wakes up at the end of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. In Alice in Wonderland, she goes home during the trial. She has started growing, and frustrated with the ridiculousness of the court's procedure, she stands up to the Wonderland characters who attack her. She brushes them away, only to wake up and discover that her visit to Wonderland was just a dream. Through the Looking Glass is another dream, which she also wakes from to return home. This is preceded by a dinner held in her honour, which becomes more and more peculiar and chaotic until she grabs the Red Queen, who, when she wakes up, turns out to be her kitten.
