I have not seen the book, but at the end of the TV special Noel falls and breaks. From his new position on the floor, he sees into the nativity scene and thus learns the true meaning of Christmas. Dying doesn't hurt, and his spirit lives on forever. This is the last story Romeo Muller wrote, and I believe it represents the work of a writer who knows he's near the end.
