A negative ion, aka an anion, has a negative charge because it acquired electrons from another now-ion that is positive. An atom because an ion to fill its valence electron shell to the most it can (eight).

Protons in the nucleus have a positive charge, and normally they are balanced by the negative charge of the electron.

When an atom loses electrons, the charges are not balanced anymore and there are more protons than electrons. Therefore the ion would now have a net positive charge.

Electrons are a negatively-charged particle. Their charge is the result of their "spin." An electron-sized particle that spins in the opposite direction of an electron is called a positron because it has a positive charge (equal in strength but opposite in charge to the electron's negative charge), and is a particle of what we call antimatter.

When an atom becomes an ion with a -2 charge, that means it has gained 2 electrons. Electrons are negatively charged, and when you add them to an atom, the overall charge on the atom goes from neutral (no charge) to negative (an anion.) Elements that form -2 anions are in group 16 on the Periodic Table, and include oxygen and sulfur.

Ion with a negative charge has more electrons than protons. They want to lose electrons, typically, to become stable.

All electrons have a negative charge.

When an atom has a negative charge, having more electrons than protons, it is a negative ion.

An atom takes on a negative charge by gaining electon/electrons and thus, becomes an anoin

What describes what happens when an atom becomes an ion with a two negative charge?

This atom gain two electrons and become an anion.

If an atom loses an electron 'negative charge' it becomes?

If it loses an electron (negative charge) it becomes positive.

it becomes happy!

When an atom becomes an ion with a negative 2 charge the atom?

Gained 2 electrons

What happens when a atom gains an electron?

When an atom gains an electron it becomes an ion with a charge of negative one. This charge comes from the electron's negativity, which changes the atom's balanced ratio of electrons to protons.

When an atom gains electrons or negative charge the process is referred to as?

Ionization. That atom becomes a anion.

When gaining electrons does an atom become negative or positive?

Gaining an electron that has a negative charge would negatively charge the atom.

What happens when chlorine gains an extra electron on the outer shell?

It becomes a negative ion.

What is the charge of electrons in an atom?

No matter where an electron happens to be -- in an atom, outside of an atom, near an atom -- its charge will ALWAYS be negative one atomic charge.

What happens when atom looses electron?

If an atom loosed electrons then it becomes an ion. The electrical charge in the atom becomes a positive ion.

What happens to the charge of an atom if you take one electron away?

there would be a plus (+) charge. Electrons have a negative charge so when a neutral atom loses an electron, it becomes positive. Another word for this is a cation.
