Actually current transfomer is step up voltage transformer n step down current transformer as current transfomer is having single primary turn of thick conductor but having more number of secondary turn of thin wires..so wkt tansformer ratio
k= n2/n1=v2/v1=i1/i2.
so it steps up volatge n steps down current...so we use current transformer as a step up transformer almost in all generating stations.
Current Transformers typically have terminals for a voltmeter on their case and a hole through that case. If you run your current carrying lead through the hole and connect an appropriate voltmeter (the voltmeter's design and resistance may affect the results) to the voltage terminals, the voltmeter will indicate the current in the lead times some factor which should be marked on the current transformer. If you thread the current lead through the hole N times then the voltmeter will indicate N times what it would read with the lead going through once (assuming that the ampere turns resulting do not cause saturation of the transformer's core.

To compare input and output voltage
Rectifiers turn A/C into D/C, but transformers can only run on A/C.
Because of fire
What should happen is that the circuit-breaker should trip to cut off the current before the transformer becomes damaged by overheating.
in welding machine, the transformer used is basically a current transforrmer. so by changing the tap of secondary side of transformer, we can increase or decrease the current in the transformer.
why does have to short-circuit secondary wire of current transformer ?
Transformer is a electric device which it can be used for to transfer the ac current one circuit to another i.e. To reduces voltage and without frequency changing. Many types of transformer available in various purpose i.e. Stepup transformer, stepdowntransformer ,autotransformer ,,,,,,,etc answered by arivukkarasu.a
Transformer is the only device which is capable to stepup or stepdown an ac signal. That's why its used widely in ac supply.

in transformers for instance a stepup transformer does exactly that, steps up the voltageAND/OR theamperage and a step down transformer reduces the same. if you have a machine that operates on say 120 volts alternating current single phase and your building or power supply in your buildingis set up for or delivers480 volts alternating current-three phase you will need a step down transformer to operate the machine.
You will end up with no current output on the secondary side of the CT.
A step-up transformer produces a voltage across its secondary winding which is higher than its primary winding. The secondary winding is connected to the load, while the primary winding is connected to the supply.

The difference between current transformer and potential transformer is that the secondary of a current transformer can not be open circuited while under service whereas that of the potential transformer an be open circuited without any damage to the transformer.
It is a transformer with No load attach to it.
