SPOILER ALERT (duh!) well, future Luke turns out to be this dude called Clive who disguised himself as future Luke to trick layton and co into falling into his master plan. Long story short, Clive goes all crazy and professor Layton stops him and saves the day and inspector chelmry arrests him.

Well.... There has been some talk that the future Luke (Let's just call him Legal) is evil, but this is in no way the truth. Well, spoiler alert. His parents were killed back when Bill Hawks exploded the Time Machine. They were in a building close by. Legal survived and went to live with Clog and his wife (I forget her name). Legal was bent on revenge (later, now that we're in Unwound Future's time) against Bill. That's why he's considered evil and is (very, VERY sadly) arrested in the end of Unwound Future.
I know this answer is a very big spoiler but Luke left to go back to his hometown in the Mist Haley also known as the City of Mist. Once the prequels come out, this will all make sense.
Unwound ended in 2002.
