Lots of molten lava shoots out and eventually hardens into lava rock. The lava can cover lots of land, depending on the volcano. One volcano can wipe out an entire city. Also, lots of gas and dust get released into the air, which can kill lots of people if there is enough of it.

When a volcanoe erupts there can be a fountain of molten lava that reaches the air, lava that flow slowly away, or just explode! When the volcano goes on limestone the lava slips and moves faster, but does not melt the limestone.

Magma underneath earth's crust is constantly going through a convection cycle: it is warmed by the core and rises, cools and sinks back down only to be heated once more. When the magma reaches a hole in the crust it builds up pressure. Eventually, the pressure becomes to much to handle and an "eruption" of lava occurs, burning all in its path. Ash and cinders as well as any other materials from inside the volcano may also enter the atmosphere upon eruption.
