In the biosphere the matter is recycled within and between the ecosystems. Elements, chemicals compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to another and from one part of the biosphere to another through biogeochemical cycles. There are the water cycle, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, and the phosphorus cycle.

Usually, plants take in matter from the soil to use as "building blocks" for their body structures. Animals eat those plants, using THEM as "building blocks" for their structures. Either those animals die and decay, where their atoms are converted to certain elements and compounds in the soil, or they die, get eaten, and become part of another animal, or a human.

After whatever ate them dies and becomes soil, plants take them in and use them as "building blocks".
