heat is a type of energy. when particles are heated, the acquire energy and become active. when the thermal energy is decreased, the particle slowly uses up the energy to get back to its normal state or it loses its energy to the surroundings.

One of the best ways to explain this, is as water. When the water particles get heat, or energy, they start to move faster, and become a vapor. But as they lose the energy, and get cold, the particles start to slow down, and they becomes again liquid. If the temperature continues to decrease, the particles lose more and more energy and become ice. Water in this form is hardly moving.

On decreasing kinetic energy, particles will move at a lower speed than before. The rate of collision will also reduce. Reducing the temperature will decrease kinetic energy.

What happens to the particles of matter when thermal energy is added to it?

When thermal energy is added to particles of matter, it causes the particles to move faster and emit more energy.

What happens to particles in matter when you remove thermal energy from them?

They stop moving and stop producing energy.

What happens is energy is taken away from matter?

When thermal energy is taken away from matter particles move more slowly. When thermal energy is added to matter particles move faster.

What happens to the particles when matter gets hotter?

The particles move faster. Thermal energy is a measure of kinetic energy of molecules.

What Explain what happens to the average kinetic energy, thermal energy, and temperature of a substance when the particles in the substance slow down.?

The particles in a substance slow down when the average kinetic energy of the particles decreases. As the average kinetic energy decreases, the internal energy decreases, and so the thermal energy decreases. As the thermal energy of the substance decreases, the temperature decreases.

What happens to particles when thermal energy is given to them?

They move faster.

Does temperature contain any particles?

Temperature is a measure of the thermal energy of a system...thermal energy cannot be said to be a particle, but particles may have thermal energy.
