All sorts of things.

Respiratory problems, heart problems, brain problems, social problems, mental problems, emotional problems, and much, much, more.

The type of drug determines the short-term and long-term effects. Some users become psychologically addicted to the euphoric sensations, and spend a majority of their time in lethargy or unproductive pursuits. Other drugs also cause physical dependence, the body's metabolism made drastically unstable. Still other drugs (as with alcohol) remove inhibitions or mental awareness, resulting in confusion, irrational behavior, or amnesia, and the potential for severe accidental injuries.

They could also be made well if they had been ill.
