it depends on how you see one of them

Marquis st. evermonde was killed by Gaspard (the tall joker who wrote blood on the wall and who's son was ran over by marquis's carriage)

the other brother was Charles Darnay's father

we never see much about him in the book except when dr. manette's letter was read

so we don't really know how and why but he is dead and that is why Marquis the younger brother rules France
