photolysis, or photodecomposition is a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken down by photons. It is defined as the interaction of one or more photons with one target molecule.

In photolysis, the solar energy absorbed by the chloroplasts is used to split water into hydrogen ions (H+) and oxygen gas. Two water molecules are consumed for every four electrons transferred to a photosystem. The solar energy/ electrons that are captured by the pigments in the photosystems are then used to form additional stable energy-rich molecules and to make ATP from ADP and Pi.

The three products of photolysis are:

1. Oxygen

2. Hydrogen- Which then goes to the calvin cycle

3. Electrons- from the sun to aid in balancing NADPH+ to eventually make glucose in the calvin cycle.
